Dos 515: Computers and Networking
Course Description:
This course included the basics of computer terminology, their components and computer networks. It detailed its information as it pertains to health care networks used in radiation oncology and imaging.
Assessment:
Students used lectures, readings and prompted discussion posts as learning tools. Discussion posts allowed for students to learn from one and other. There were weekly quizzes taken to assess the knowledge obtained.
Course Discussions:
Each week we were asked to participate in a discussion. A question was asked and a discussion followed.
Week 1 Discussion: Black Boxes
Week 2 Discussion: Computer Networks
Week 3 Discussion: Computer Safeguards
Self-Reflection:
At the end of each course, students are able to sit and reflect on the class and how it has affected their education and growth.
The knowledge and skill I gained was how computers and their networks work. I also got a better understanding of how imaging and radiation oncology networks operate. I was not very familiar with any of this so this class was very eye opening.
The new knowledge and skills will benefit me by being able to troubleshoot problems in the future with computers and understand what is wrong when someone is explaining it.
I struggle with most of the course. I am not a computer knowledgeable person so learning all the terms and how everything works together was like learning a new language for me.
I feel pretty good about how computers function now after the course and I feel that I could have an intelligent conversation about computers now having this course.
Other reflective thoughts…Before staring school and looking at the course list I did not really understand why this course was on there but now after taking it I am very happy that it is because I have a much better understanding of how patient data is stored and passed through computer networks. Also, I know just how important computer networking knowledge is to dosimetry.
