DOS 543: Seminar in Medical Dosimetry
Course Description
This course offers students practice at taking mock board exams. Then uses the exams as guidelines to assess the students areas of weakness in which they need to focus on to better prepare themselves for the MDCB exam.
Assessment
Students were guided by review material, mock board exams, and discussion prompts. This allowed students to contribute to the discussion forms in a well in-formed manner as well as learn from one another. Two attempts were allowed on each of the mock exams, to allow students to assess their weak areas and learn from incorrect answers before taking their second attempt.
Discussions
There were two discussion topics in this course that focused on difficult topics that tend to arise infrequently. Students were to think about these topics, do some research and ask advice from preceptors to gain a better understanding of these topics. My contributions can be found below:
Discussion 1:Spinal Irradiation and BED
Discussion 2: Pacemakers
Self-Assessment:
At the end of each course students are asked to reflect on the class and how it affected their education and growth.
The new knowledge and skills I gained in this course were how to organize a year and a half worth of information into a manageable study form. I now have all of my class materials arranged in a fashion that better flows for my style of studying so that I can better prepare myself for the MDCB exam. Also taking the mock board exams really helped to highlight my weaker areas that I need to spend a little more time on before I take the certification board.
The new knowledge and skills will benefit me by setting me on the right track for studying for my MDCB certification board. As I am not eligible to take the exam until August 2018, I now have a grasp of the hierarchy of importance of materials I need to study to best set myself up to pass the exam.
I struggle with getting too anxious and nervous and not taking the time to carefully read the test questions. I found often after taking the first attempt I knew the correct answers to the questions, I just did not read carefully enough and chose the wrong answer in haste.
I feel pretty good about my overall knowledge that I am leaving this institution with. When I first learned that this course was mostly mock exams, I was nervous and hesitant. However, after taking the exams I am much more confident in the knowledge I have gained in my education and I feel more comfortable moving towards the real board certification exam.
Other reflective thoughts… When I began this journey I was worried about how well I would perform in an online learning environment. However, I would have to admit, not it was not easy, it was more manageable than I thought. Everyone along the way has everything set up so that if you just follow the given schedule you will get the required information you need in a timely manner. You will learn the information as you go. I feel very confident in the educational material taught to me in all my classes as well as the clinical applications I have learned at Orlando H
